Brúarskóli við Dalbraut

Finally we got round to visit the main local company who collects garbage from private homes on the large capital area, Sorpa. sorpa

We were informed first about the way Sorpa collects and disposes of all household waste. In Reykjavik all homes have a grey and blue garbage bin. In the blue one families can collect paper, in the grey one non recyclable waste is collected. Households are besides using these bins encouraged to recycle as much as possible. Plastic bottles can be collected for money. Other plastic is collected to recycle, as is timber, garden waste, clothes, large reusable furniture, chemical waste and electrical appliances. All these groups of waste families can bring to a recycle station in different collection points in town. Sorpa collects the bins and sorts the waste and makes it into cubicles which are either buried, or recycled and shipped abroad. The waste disposal site on the edge of town where non recyclable waste is buried,  is used to produce methane on which fuel all cars and trucks of Sorpa are driving. Through recycling Reykjavik has reduced it's waste in the paste years up to 70% in volume. It was a very informative visit which gave us lot's of new teaching ideas and in a booklet for our students we have got a first environmental game produced by the educational team of Sorpa. We will ask permission to translate for all later.
