  • COAL MINE

One of the branches of energy industry in Poland is mining.

We had an opportunity to see The Mine Museum in AGH University of Science and Technology.

We learnt about the history of mining in Poland, how do miners work under the ground and how difficult and danger that work is.

We had some discussion about the changes required by ecology and sustainability. We were thinking if coal mines have any future....

  • The sustainable energy part 2

This year, again, we have visited AGH The University of Science and Technology for The Week of Sustainable Energy.

This is what we have learnt:

  •  During hosting our Partners from Reykiavik, we decided to visit The Institute of Nuclear Physics. We have seen  the show: "Star Dust: Physics - The Most Magnificent Spectacle of the

Universe" which was a mixture of art, science, poetry and philosophy. This mixture is

composed in order to explain to what extent we are the part of the Universe

and how deeply physics influences us. It was done through acting, poetry,

film and science experiments. The Instituteof Nuclear Physics wanted to ravish the audience by

the beauty of science on its chase after the mystery of Nature.

It was just great and our knowledge of the nuclear energy and nuclear physics has increased.

  • Before the advertisement...

As you know we are going to do an advertisement ‘Use The Bicycle’. To do so we  firstly  have organised a laboratory  lesson to introduce the students with the concept of copyright in the  media world and in the context of law with the help of two teachers of informatics and law accordingly.

We have tried to understand the concept of copyright answering the questions what copyright exactly means, how long valid it is etc. We got used with the professional vocabulary of the media world and we have seen how we can use the required resources in legal way with reference to civil code.

This week the first clapboard of our advertisement!

  • On Tuesday 27 January we had the first new year's meeting with the project Big Green Footsteps. This time we wanted to give the possibility to our students to discuss and to try to see the problems, which could be seen by the adults about the pollution in Turin, the city, where our hospital is situated.

We gave them the opportunity to say where they can see the biggest problems and how to solve them. We were speaking about the energy sources and possibilities for Turin to take an energy from them. We didn't miss the topic about the atomic energy and we explained, why in Italy there are no nuclear centres. We have found all together the main sources of smog and pollution in the city, which are heating, the car factories, the position (in the valley) and also the traffic (the cars, buses, so on).

The only possible topic to solve seriously is the traffic for us. Because of this we have decided to create the advertisement "Use the bicycle!" and to try to motivate our friends, families and others to use the bicycle, the "greenest" way to get to the work/school.

    EXPECT OUR ADVERTISEMENT SOON!

  • BIKE PRIDE IN TORINO

On Sunday the 21th of September a group of teachers of the hospital school in Torino and their families partecipated this year in the Bike Pride Day, a big event organized in the frame of the European Week for Sustainable Mobility. We spent a wonderful day, (sunny and warm as you can see from pictures) together with other 40.000 bikers who for once took possession of the streets and boulevards of the town: a long, coloured snake crossed Torino for some hours and stopped the car traffic... Another world is possible!

This a ppoint of Giacomo our student of 14. He spent 1 year with us and took parte in every Big Green activity. So, he is the best expert among our students!

Here you can find all the results of his personal researches. At the moment the document is only in italian but we hope to translate it into english soon ...

  • Making Wind Turbines

As part of design technology, the students in Collingham Gardens have studied wind energy.

In teams they were given the materials required  and challenged to make the most powerful wind turbine they could! They very enthusiastically took on this challenge and got to work.

With minimum adult input they were able to construct their wind turbines and investigate where it would make the most energy.

    Absolutely amazing team work!

See the link below for some more great energy projects. We might attempt the solar oven (that's if we ever get the right weather for it!!).

  • Electricity - student blog

Electricity is made of atoms. When wind is blowing a windmill, the windmill spins. If it spins fast enough it creates electricity. Hydro powerplants work the same as windmills except the water spins a turbine.

  • Sustainable energy workshop

We had some guests over to our school this week from Dublin City University to discuss sustainable energy sources. They brought some great toys with them. Our students explored a lego village powered by wind and solar power. They also had the opportunity to build and run a hydrogen powered cars. These cars used a solar panel to split ionised water into hydrogen and oxygen and this in turn fuelled the car.

The session was very successful. Both primary and post-primary students participated in the workshop. The youngest and oldest children were both motivated and engaged by the third level staff and their presentation. It was a great morning.

  • 100% renewable energy

    Hello all,

On the topic of the big green footsteps, I found an excellent link on the BBC talking about Iceland and the ways in which they are trying to become the first nation to use 100% renewable energy.

    BBC Click

    Enjoy.
