August/September - The Air We Breathe

August/September

We started school with the kids 23rd of August. In the first month we started teaching around the theme "The air we breathe and photosynthesis". We chose to start our Big Green Footsteps project like this, from the idea: If we want to encourage our students and ourselves to think 'green' we should first and foremost inspire awe and deep respect for the earth and nature surrounding us. We watched part of the BBC documentary Earth as a starting point. Later we investigated leaves and trees. We went into the park Laugardalur to find common species of trees, and collected leaves to research under the microscope. After drying the leaves we used them to make wax crayon pictures. Inspired by former president Vigdís Finnbogadóttir we planted trees and shrubs around the school and collected seeds of birch trees to help the Governmental Agency for Forests and Plants to reforest a very barren area around the famous volcanoe Mount Hekla. Around the Day of Icelandic Nature 16th of September we watched a short film of Omar Ragnarsson, because on his birthday the icelandic nature is celebrated and actions to support the environment are initiated all around the country.
