Brúarskóli við Dalbraut

Since we learned about the Green Flag project in schools at the congress 11th of October, one of us joined the environmental committee of Brúarskóli as a whole. Besides Dalbraut, Brúarskóli works in three other departments. All in all we have a staff of about 40 members. In the environmental committee 7 members of all departments of Brúarskóli come together and discuss how to encourage a good working environment for all involved. The committee decided to ask our headmaster to invite Landvernd ( the national agency working on the Green Flag project.) to hold a lecture about environmental education.http://landvernd.is/en/Environmental-Education/Eco-Schools

This lecture was very well received and all members of staff are inspired to look at Green Steps one can possibly take in running a school and educating young minds. The lecturer Gerður Magnúsdóttir was quite funny and encouraging. She explained to us that Iceland is far from The Green Dream country many people believe it to be. In fact Icelanders have the highest Carbon Footprint in the world. If all people on earth would use 1,8 ha of earth's resources, there would be enough to support everybody. On average countries use 2,2 ha per citizen. Which means we all live in debt or minus. Iceland is at the top with a use of 56 ha of earth's resources. How can  this be one asks?. If the carbon footprint of the fishing industry is taken out, Iceland consumes12 ha of earths's resources per citizen. More than the United Arab Emirates who are second with 10ha per citizen. One excuse is the northern position of Iceland on the globe. All imports have to come a long way. We cannot deny though that Icelanders are excessive consumers of earths's resources and that it is lucky for the world Icelanders are few. :) Any way we inspired our colleagues to join us in turning around the wheel.
