October - Thinking about games

This month we have been working on games. We started with a brainstorm about our student's favorite games and how we could adapt them towards environmental games for BGF. We had to figure out a bit what would be handy for our students. First we played an environmental game from Sorpa, the waste collection firm in Reykjavik. We got permission from them to translate the game and will publish this soon under the games-blog.

This game proved to be ok for our students. They enjoyed playing the game, but they did not have to take any decisions in the game which would favor a green lifestyle. The game is informative but luck decides who wins.

We teachers would like to develop a game in which our students need to take decisions and green decisions would somehow lead to winning.

Thinking about this we decided to start with transforming Trivial pursuit. We made a format to make questions in the same categories as our blogs; Biodiversity, energy, climate change, water, food/green cooking, and recycling. We had in mind that each of our students would make one question card with 6 interesting questions. Though we have had some results, it proved very hard for our students to make the questions because their knowledge is so limited. So we keep this in store for a while and will publish the format under games. If all students in all our schools would manage one card we could make it work together. Please tell us how you feel about that.

At last we decided to make a more easy game, one which we could finish in no time. We wanted a game which would not take long to play and which would be more challenging than the Sorpa game. We decided to make a Quartet-game with all kind of recycling categories. This game we could finish in three lessons. We will explain in the game blog. We need to work on an English version later.
