Before Christmas ceramic artist Orla Kaminska developed a lesson for our Comenius project. Our students made 3 dimensional christmas decorations using waste plastic bottles. The students had great fun while learning about the 3 R’s, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
We decided to reuse our used christmas cards to make a new decoration for next year. We used the compass from our maths set to draw out 20 circles with a radius of 4cm. We then used the radius to mark/divide the circumference of the circle in three (Pi = 3.14). We joined these three points to make an almost equilateral triangle. The rest of the instructions can be found here

This lesson had loads of maths and geometry skills. I think this would work at any time of the year using cereal boxes.
Our pupils were working on The Star of Betlehem. It was made of wastepaper ( old yellowish cards from books)
In the Day Ward pupils made funny wall newsletter which was the sign of desire for snow :)
The pupils created a Christmas Tree made from the old cardboard box and pads
We had many more Christmas Trees! This one was made from the wastepaper
During the Art classes pupils created the wall newsletter about Christmas
This is a short view of our work on recycling christmas cards. You have got the final products!Pupils from Day Ward.
Proudly, but subtly, reminding passersby to be a little more reflective.
Hello guys,
Here is what we have been doing to do with recycling and the Comenius project at our school - we made recycled instruments.
We began by using this “instrument lab” to introduce our new project in DT yesterday and the children loved it http://www.nyphilkids.org/lab/main.phtml? (instrument lab)
We then made our instruments – can you guess what we used to make them?
For further details of instruments and landfill harmonic see:
Also, this is quite a nice explanation of the different instruments and how sound works

Have fun!

The post-primary students in Dublin had a go at the News & Views activity we learned about at the Science Museum. We looked at a topic from the Science museum's Antenna website. The topic was a new substance which can be used for wiring electronics. This substance is made from recycled carbon drawn from greenhouse gases.
This activity was very successful in engaging the students who quickly began to discuss the topic. They felt empowered to begin to form opinions and debate the pros and cons of the topic.
As a class we were very happy with the activity and attacked another topic a few days later. This time it was echolocation technology helping visually impaired cyclists.
The post primary students from Dublin, Ireland prepared four postcards made up completely of recycled materials. These postcards were posted to each of the four comenius partner schools.
The base postcards were cutout from cardboard boxes reclaimed from the paper recycling bin. We then used newspapers and magazines to create a postcard from Ireland. The activity was fun for students and generated positive conversation about recycling and the also about the partner countries.
We hope that they arrived intact.
Here Francesca's first recipe with leftovers. Francesca has already been dismissed and came back to her town, not far from Torino, but she promised to go on cooperating with us. She already collected some recipes which are going to be shared soon ...
